Ultherapy Shots vs. Thermage Shots: How Many Do You Actually Need?

ULTHERAPY VS. THERMAGE SHOTS

Open almost any Gangnam clinic price list and you’ll see Ultherapy shots and Thermage shots sold like phone data plans: 300, 600, 900. More sounds better. It’s also the easiest way to spend more than you need to.

The problem is that a “shot” isn’t a standard unit. One Ultherapy shot and one Thermage shot measure completely different things, and “300 shots” on one device doesn’t compare to “300 shots” on another.

This guide explains what a shot means on each device, what counts clinical studies and doctors actually use, and the signs a package is bigger than your face needs. Only your doctor can set your final plan, but you can walk in knowing the right questions.

What “Ultherapy Shots” and “Thermage Shots” Actually Mean

The two devices work differently, so their “shots” can’t be compared one for one.

Ultherapy: A Shot Is One Line of Ultrasound

Ultherapy uses micro-focused ultrasound to heat tissue at set depths, typically 4.5 mm (the deep SMAS layer), 3.0 mm and 1.5 mm. Doctors and clinical studies count treatment in lines: one pass of the transducer delivers one line of tiny heat points.

When a Korean clinic says “300 shots of Ulthera,” it means about 300 lines.

Thermage: A Shot Is One Radiofrequency Pulse

Thermage FLX uses monopolar radiofrequency to heat the deeper skin. Each tip is single-use and designed to deliver a fixed number of pulses; once those pulses are used, the tip stops working (Thermage).

That’s why Thermage is sold as 300, 600 or 900 “shots.” You’re buying a tip with that many pulses, usually the 4.0 cm² Total Tip for the face, or a small 0.25 cm² Eye Tip in 225 or 450 pulses.

Why the Numbers Don’t Compare

So 600 Ultherapy shots and 600 Thermage shots are different treatments, not the same dose. The same applies to cheaper HIFU devices sold as “Ulthera-style” lifting. Their shot counts follow each machine’s own design, so a big number on a different device isn’t automatically more treatment.

How Many Ultherapy Shots Do You Need?

There’s no single correct number. It depends on your face size, skin laxity and which areas you treat. Clinical studies still give useful reference points.

Full Face Ultherapy Shots

In one Merz-sponsored study, participants received a full-face treatment of approximately 500 lines at two depths (ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT01519206).

Face and Upper Neck

A study of Asian patients in Taiwan treated the upper neck, cheeks, brow and eye area with at least 800 lines across two depths (ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT03545412).

Lower Face and Jawline Only

A standard protocol for the lower face and upper neck used 360 lines at 4.5 mm followed by 310 lines at 3.0 mm, around 670 lines in total (Merz study summary).

What This Means for Your Quote

A very small package for a full face and neck may be spread too thin to make a visible difference. A huge package for a single area may simply be more than you need. Ask your doctor how the lines will be split by area and depth.

How Many Thermage Shots Do You Need?

For the face, most clinics choose between the 600 and 900 pulse Total Tip. In a 2024 survey of 204 Asia-Pacific physicians, Korean doctors tended to prefer the 600 pulse tip, while many doctors elsewhere used the 900 (Journal of Drugs in Dermatology).

As a rough guide:

  • 300 pulses – a smaller area, or a lighter top-up.
  • 600 pulses – a common full-face choice in Korea.
  • 900 pulses – a larger face, or face plus neck.
  • Eye Tip (225 or 450) – a separate tip for the eyelids and eye area.

The same survey found most doctors prefer to repeat a Total Tip treatment about once a year. That matters when a clinic suggests repeating after a few weeks.

Guardian’s Insider Note

The most useful question isn’t “how many shots?” It’s “how many shots go where?”

When a client is quoted 600 Ultherapy shots, I ask the clinic to show the split: how many lines on the jawline, how many on the cheeks, how many at each depth. A good doctor answers in seconds. If nobody can explain the plan, the number on the price list is all you’re paying for.

5 Signs You’re Being Oversold

  1. The number comes before the consultation. Your shot count should follow an assessment of your face, not a menu.
  2. “More shots, more lift.” Results depend on correct depth and placement, not just volume.
  3. Repeat sessions within weeks. Both devices work gradually, and most doctors repeat about once a year.
  4. No device or tip check. You should be able to see the genuine device and an unopened Thermage tip.
  5. Ultherapy, Thermage and fillers all on day one. Combinations are common, but the plan should match your goal.

How We Check Your Lifting Quote Before You Book

As a registered medical tourism facilitator, not a doctor, we don’t decide your shot count. Our job is to make sure you know exactly what you’re buying:

  1. Confirm whether the quote is for genuine Ultherapy or Thermage, or another device.
  2. Ask for the shot count by area and depth in writing.
  3. Check the Thermage tip size and pulse count on the quote.
  4. Ask about touch-up and repeat-timing policies.
  5. Interpret the doctor’s reasoning for you, in plain language.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Ultherapy shots do I need for a full face? Clinical studies have used around 500 lines for the full face, and 800 or more when the neck and eye area are included. Your doctor will adjust for your face.

Is 300 Ultherapy shots enough? It may suit a small area such as the jawline or a light treatment. For a full face, it’s usually on the low side.

What’s the difference between Thermage 600 and 900? They’re the same tip size with a different number of pulses. 900 gives more coverage, which may suit a larger face or the neck too.

Are Ultherapy shots and Thermage shots the same? No. An Ultherapy shot is a line of ultrasound; a Thermage shot is a radiofrequency pulse.

How often should I repeat Ultherapy or Thermage? Most patients repeat about once a year, depending on their skin and goals.

Can I combine Ultherapy and Thermage? Some clinics combine them because they target different layers. Ask your doctor whether a combination fits your goals and budget.
